French India after the ARW?

I was reading a few old threads (such as this one), in which mention is made of one Pierre André de Suffren, a famous French admiral in the late 18th century. In the linked thread, fhaessig mentions that given enough time - by delaying the end of the American Revolutionary War, Suffren could have conquered all of British India. The TTL Treaty of Paris would thus strip Britain of yet another colonial possession, giving India to France.

So, what of this idea? How could it happen, and what would be the results?

They won't hold it long, what with the French Revolution going on in a few years. Would Britain regain control? Or will the Indian princes unite? Who knows? Anybody an expert?

One would think that the French might be able to extract enough money from their new Indian colonies to pay off their debts and thus avoid the Revolution. If the French government is out of debt, it can import food when the harvest goes bad in 1788, and thus avoid riots and whatnot.
